Is It Possible to Fracture a Bone and Not Realize It?
Sprains and bone fractures have similar symptoms, so you may break a bone and not realize it. Here’s how to know if you fractured a bone and need a medical exam.

It seems like you would know if you broke a bone, but some fractures can go unnoticed.

Unnoticed fractures are typically minor, and you may think the injury is not severe or will disappear in a few days. However, if you think you may have a broken bone, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Keep reading to learn about the signs of a fractured bone from our experienced team at Nevada Orthopedic and Spine Center in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada.

Signs of a fractured bone

Since minor fractures and sprains can have similar symptoms, it’s important to know the signs of a fractured bone. Sprains usually have pain and swelling around the injury and additional pain when applying pressure.

The following symptoms typically accompany fractures:

  • Inability to move the injured area
  • Pain
  • Swelling and bruising around the injury
  • Protruding bone
  • Stiffness
  • Deformity

While not all fractures will have all those symptoms, you should come to see us if you’re experiencing any of them.

Types of fractures

Depending on the force that caused the trauma, your fracture will fit into one of the following types.

Open compound fracture

If your broken bone ruptures your skin, you have an open compound fracture and are at high risk for infection, so immediate medical attention is necessary.

Stable fracture

The broken pieces are only slightly out of place in a stable fracture, which can take up to six weeks to heal.

Oblique fracture

Oblique fractures are when the fracture is at an angle or diagonal line. Medication and resting are the typical treatments for this fracture.

Transverse fracture

Transverse fractures are straight lines across the bone and typically only require rest to heal. We may also prescribe anti-inflammatory medication.

Comminuted fracture

In this type of fracture, the bone has shattered into at least three pieces, requiring surgical repair.

What to do if you think you have a fracture

On your way to the ER, gently remove any clothing from the injury. Stabilize the injury and create a temporary splint from cardboard or a towel.
