Aubrey's Story
Problem: Scoliosis
Result: Back to a healthy, active lifestyle

As an active, energetic nine-year-old, Aubrey was attending a gymnastics class when her coach saw something interesting about her stance. As she bent over, there was a noticeable hump on her right side, and the question of “do you have scoliosis?” was asked. Because she wasn’t suffering any pain, Aubrey had never mentioned it to her parents prior to that day. However, after bringing the coach’s question to their attention, her crooked stance and right shoulder blade were evidence enough that something was wrong.

Aubrey’s parents pulled her out of gymnastics, and took her to see Dr. Thomas. She was fitted for a brace and then underwent two and a half years of monitoring to prevent the curve from getting worse. While this process wasn’t a cure, Dr. Thomas wanted to ensure that Aubrey was receiving the best care possible. “He just cared about her so much and didn’t ever rush,” said Aubrey’s parents.

In June of 2012, Aubrey underwent surgery to correct her scoliosis. “I think her curves were considered to be pretty extreme,” said Aubrey’s parents. Because Dr. Thomas waited until the a specific system was available for her, he was able to take the top curve from 63 degrees to 5 degrees and her bottom curve from 71 degrees to 7 degrees. Despite the severity, Aubrey’s parents were pleased with her care, stating the procedure “was the longest 13 hours of my life, but I’m so grateful he was so caring and didn’t rush through it”.

About her recovery, Aubrey’s parents said “Dr. Thomas promised me if we would do what he told us to do, she would recover quickly.” After countless long walks and painful sitting, Aubrey made a substantial recovery in nearly two weeks.

Now, at age 17, nearly five years after the surgery, Aubrey lives a completely normal life, according to her parents. “Sometimes I forget she went through all of that. She lives a completely normal life!”

Katy's Story
Problem: Hip Impingement
Result: Strong support throughout her care journey

Katy is a young, vibrant woman who struggles to stay active and pain-free while suffering from a hip impingement, or ‘bumping,’ that prevents the smooth movement of her ball-and-socket joint. She knows that surgery is likely in her future, but for now and for several reasons, including her job as a bartender, she has chosen another option.

Katy is a patient of Dr. John Kastrup and over the course of seven years they have developed a pain management and physical therapy program that keeps her as comfortable as possible, on her feet and away from the operating room. “I love my job but it’s physically demanding. Long hours, running, on my feet,” Katy said. “Dr. Kastrup and I are always figuring out ways to allow me to continue the active work I love.”

Katy refers to her ongoing treatment as a journey and along this journey a strong rapport has developed. “Dr. Kastrup has always cared about helping me find a way through this. One time I broke down during an exam. I completely lost it. But Dr. Kastrup made me feel completely validated and understood the emotional aspect of this.”

While Katy’s medical future may be uncertain, she is certain that she wants her doctor by her side. “I want him to be my main man going forward. Trust is a huge part of all this and he’s earned mine. In deciding a future course of treatment, I know my voice will be heard.”

Adeline's Story

Problem: Trouble bending and moving
Result: Walking care free again

After 2 years of instability, I realized something was happening with my body when I couldn’t bend at my waist on my right side and my left leg was bending inward and touching my other leg.

I put off the problem to take care of my husband until he passed away in late 2015. At 78 years old, I did not want to put a burden on my children, so I got in touch with Ronald W. Hillock, M.D.. After taking an MRI and x-rays, the results showed I needed a total right hip replacement. I had the surgery performed on July 6, 2016 and the operation was a success and was able to bend again with determination and therapy.

After 6 months my leg was in bad shape and had an MRI and x-rays done and showed I needed a total left knee replacement.. I had the surgery performed on January 9, 2017 and was pleased with the outcome.

After 2 weeks of surgery, I was able to put aside my cane and walker and pursued therapy. I am happy to say thank you to Dr. Hillock and Deanna Rechtzigel, APRN and I highly recommend them to my friends and family and am happy to look in the mirror again.

Thank you, Adeline

Andrea
Andrea's Story
Problem: Pain from Scoliosis
Result: Back to swimming laps and enjoying life

Like most sophomores in high school, Andrea was involved in many activities that kept her moving. However, she was forced to constantly stretch to alleviate a pain in her back, and ultimately had to stop some of the more strenuous activities. After noticing that her right shoulder appeared higher than her left, especially when wearing her backpack and purse, she visited Dr. Thomas for answers.

In June 2015, at the age of 18, Andrea underwent surgery with Dr. Thomas to improve her back issues. Because her scoliosis was diagnosed later in life, the only option was surgery in order to get her back to normal movement. Andrea’s procedure was a spinal fusion in her thoracic spine from T5 to T12, in which Dr. Thomas inserted two rods and fourteen pins to correct her scoliosis. After the surgery, Andrea spent less than four days in the hospital and then started her recovery process at home.

According to Andrea her recovery time was “very frustrating and painful at first.” However, after a month of recovery Andrea was back to swimming laps and making great progress. Nearly a month and a half after the surgery, Andrea was working as a lifeguard again.

Andrea says, “even though the surgery itself took about 8 hours and I spent half of a summer recovering, it was definitely worth it.” Thanks to Dr. Thomas, she no longer even thinks about her back. “As awful as it is to have scoliosis, I couldn’t think of a better doctor to take care of me.”

As of today, Andrea is living a normal lifestyle while in college. She’s even back to her favorite activities like swimming, biking, running, rock climbing, skiing, and moderate yoga!

Tina
Tina's Story
Problem: Kohler Disease
Result: Walking without the pain

Tina was dedicated to leading an active lifestyle and working out at the gym around three to four times a week, as well as getting walks done in the morning. Because of this daily routine, any sort of pain was evident, especially if it was in her feet or legs. After waking up one morning and stepping on the floor, she felt an intense pain in her right foot. Assuming that it was just a sprain, Tina went about her days and iced her foot normally. However, after six weeks, the pain continued to linger, and she decided seeking medical help was her only route.

During her first few appointments with her orthopedic surgeon, Tina was diagnosed with a stress fracture and placed in a walking boot for six weeks. When that time passed, she returned to the surgeon and explained that she was in so much pain that walking would sometimes lead to severe pain and tears in her eyes. Tina was then sent to get a MRI, which showed no stress fracture, but lead to her being placed in the walking boot again and given a temporary cortisone shot for the pain.

At 52 years of age, and still working to keep her active lifestyle, Tina decided that enough was enough and contacted Holman Chan, M.D., at Nevada Orthopedic and Spine Center to see if there was anything more to be done. After explaining her symptoms, Dr. Chan diagnosed her with Kohler Disease, which meant her navicular bone was not getting any blood supply. Immediately, Dr. Chan decided to perform a surgery in which he would drill a hole in the bone to see if it would bleed and heal. Unfortunately, the follow-ups to the surgery showed that the bone had died and was not healing itself.

After “living on pain pills” and nearly unable to take the pain any more, Tina was given an option to have a midfoot fusion with a graft from her hip bone. Although scared, she says “I knew I had the best surgeon for my condition,” and decided to move forward with the procedure on December 8, 2016.

Now in her 15th week post-surgery, Tina says that she is walking without the pain she had before, and truly has Dr. Chan to thank. “I am truly blessed to be a patient of Dr. Chan,” she says. “He takes the time to know his patients and listen to them, (and) his staff is also very efficient and friendly, and always willing to help.” Tina now looks forward to getting back to her gym routine and leading her active lifestyle, leaving off with “I can’t thank Dr. Chan enough!!”

Alexa's Story
Problem: ACL Injury
Result: Back to playing soccer

Since the age of four, soccer had become a huge part of Alexa’s life. Whether it was merely playing around the neighborhood or competing in tournaments, it was imperative to her livelihood that she was out on the field. At the age of 12, while competing in a soccer tournament in Arizona, Alexa felt a sharp pain in her knee and knew something was wrong.

The tournament was on a Saturday, and by the following Tuesday, Alexa was in the office of Thomas C. Kim, M.D., preparing to receive the new of her MRI. The verdict of her injury was a torn Meniscus and ACL, which meant she would have to receive surgery and go through recovery before playing soccer again. While the future seemed uncertain, Alexa immediately said “giving up is never an option, and I will do whatever it takes to step into that field again.”

WIth Dr. Kim by her side, Alexa went through two separate surgeries in March and July of 2016. One was to repair her Meniscus, while the other was to have an ACL Patellar Tendon Graft. Within five months of the second surgery, Alexa was already cleared to practice with no restrictions. Now, nine months after the final surgery, she has played in four major tournaments, and has helped lead her team in being number one in the nation for her age group on the “Gotsoccer” rankings. Her mother states that “she is not only more knowledgeable about her injury, but she is also stronger physically and mentally than she has ever been.”

With ACL injuries being common in the sport, Alexa’s family says they have seen several young players have the same surgery, but her recovery has been the best by far thanks to Dr. Kim. “Dr. Kim is an outstanding surgeon that takes pride in his work,” Alexa’s mother says. “He is always informative and encouraging, letting you know what he is doing and what you need to do at home to get you back to the condition you were before your injury.”

Although the injury was painful, Alexa and her family stand by the fact that she wouldn’t be in the position she is today without his help. “Without the surgeries performed by Dr. Kim, she (Alexa) would not be able to play soccer again,” states Alexa’s mom. While she’s hopeful that she’ll never have to deal with this surgery again, she leaves on the note that “Dr. Kim is amazing, and we have already recommended him to people that we know.”

David's Story
Problem: Spina Bifida, Diastematomyelia
Result: Daily activities without facing debilitating pain

David was born with a rare form of Spina Bifida, Diastematomyelia, and thus had experienced Osteoarthritis and congenital problems throughout his body for the majority of his life. At many times it was even hard to walk without some sort of pain, which led to difficulty in taking care of daily tasks. At the age of 45, he determined that the issues he was experiencing had gone on for too long and decided to seek the assistance of Michael S. Bradford, M.D.At the initial meeting with Dr. Bradford, David explained that his right knee was the primary source of issues. The first course of action at that point was to do a minor surgery for a torn meniscus, with the high possibility of a future surgery. While the pain subsided for a period, within a short amount of time it was back with a vengeance, oftentimes causing David to lose the ability to walk. After an examination, it was determined that a full knee replacement was needed. After the surgery, David recovered in a rehab facility for about nine days. During that time, he says that Dr. Bradford visited him in the “wee hours of the morning,” just to be sure that he was doing well and healing nicely. David says that he never felt uncomfortable, making the recovery that much easier. “The support of Dr. Bradford is beyond belief,” he says. “He is so easy to talk to…and takes his time you and explained things on my level.”Several years later, David found that his Spina Bifida had caused his right leg to bend at a 45 degree angle. Once again, walking on that foot was nearly unbearable, and he was told that a surgery would be necessary to straighten the leg. Dr. Bradford explained that he could make a cut in the hamstring behind his knee, causing the leg to straighten. However, due to the nature of David’s Spina Bifida, it wasn’t a guaranteed fix, and it would take time after recovery to be certain. After eight weeks in therapy and rehab, David says “every one of Dr. Bradford’s surgeries have worked to the full extent he hoped for,” and that his leg has since straightened out as much as possible.David has seen Dr. Bradford for another knee replacement since then, and continues to check in with him to ensure he is in great shape. As he says, “my quality of life would be zilch without Dr. Bradford.” Today, David goes about his daily activities as normal without facing debilitating pain. However, if his pain ever flares up, he trusts in the fact that Dr. Bradford will be there for him. “I know, with my rare condition of Spina Bifida, that Dr. Bradford will fix me and take care of me and value me.”

Patricia's Story
Problem: Rotator cuff tear with impingement and arthritis
Result: Sleeping well again at night

At 57 years old, Patricia was not expecting daily tasks like raising her arm to put a shirt on or working her job to cause problems. However, due to a sharp pain in her right shoulder, she found certain things like sleeping throughout the night nearly impossible. In early 2016, Patricia was receiving a few various treatments from a chiropractor to help ease the pain. After the treatments proved to not be worthwhile, it was suggested that she go to an orthopedic center for a second opinion. Ultimately, after a series of x-rays, it was determined that Patricia was dealing with a complete rotator cuff tear and would need surgery in order to prevent pain from flaring up.After experiencing a less than desirable situation with another practice during the scheduling of her first surgery, Patricia sought the help of Brad Baker, M.D., following a recommendation from her husband. Within two and half months from her initial meeting with Dr. Baker, Patricia was waking up from surgery and preparing to get back to normal life. She even said that while she remembers Dr. Baker saying “this will hurt a little,” there was no pain.Patricia made a full recovery, and says the whole ordeal was “quick and painless” from start to finish. “Dr. Baker is caring, knowledgeable, and very supportive,” she says. Even though the initial process got off to a rocky start, she says that Dr. Baker got her back on course in no time, stating “he didn’t prolong the time, he just got right in there and did what had to be done to make me feel better.” After dealing with something as severe as a rotator cuff tear with impingement and arthritis, Patricia says “if you’re looking for an orthopedic (surgeon), Dr. Baker is the one!”

Patients Reviews

I went to Nevada Orthopedic and Spine for what I thought was a pulled groin but while going in to see Dalton Laut PA-C I found out that I had arthritis in my hip joint that was affecting my everyday life. No more going to the gym, etc. Although I was sad and nervous what I did find out was that there was a solution. I was met with compassion, empathy and a clear path to eventually getting back to the gym and my every day life. Thank you!

The most unprofessional Doctor i have ever had. He has no problem wearing a baseball cap during your visit that refers to women as Ho's. I will no longer use this group of Doctors who refuse to address the issue because he is a senior partner.

This was the best team of medical staff I have been around in a long time. The Doctor H. Chan, who performed a successful calcaneus fracture surgery, and gave me back my leg, had been busy but still took the time to make me feel like I was the only patient there. The nurse that took my initial information was terrific, she too made me feel like I was the first patient of the day. I loved visiting Nevada Orthopedic & Spine Center in Henderson, and if I need their service again I know I will be welcomed.
