Fractures Q & A

What are fractures?

A fracture affects the bone. Typically, fractures are small, but they can cause a whole lot of pain and potential complications. Fractures can be classified as:

An oblique fracture

This fracture presents an angled pattern.

A stable fracture

When your bones break, but the ends still line up and are barely out of place, it’s a stable fracture.

A compound fracture

A compound fracture means the broken parts of the bone may have pierced the skin, and the bone may even be visible.

A comminuted fracture

This type of fracture is when the bone has shattered into multiple pieces.

A transverse fracture

This type of fracture has a horizontal fracture line.

All of these types of fractures require specialized treatment. The experienced team at Nevada Orthopedic & Spine Center properly diagnoses your fracture and sets the bone properly so it heals and has minimal chance of causing long-term problems.

When should I suspect I have a fracture?

Fractures cause a lot of pain and may prevent you from properly using the affected body part. How severe your symptoms are depends on the bone affected.

If the break occurs in the arm, shoulder, or elbow area, you may have trouble lifting your arm or extending it fully. Breaks in the bones of your legs or feet can make it difficult or impossible to walk. You specifically experience:

  • Severe pain
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Swelling, bruising, or tenderness
  • Deformity

If you suspect you have a fracture, seek care right away. An X-ray confirms a break in your bone, and sometimes an MRI may be ordered to determine the full extent of your injury.

What are the treatments for fractures?

The team at Nevada Orthopedic & Spine Center usually helps heal a fracture with nonsurgical treatments. A sling, splint, or cast immobilizes the affected bone to allow them to heal. Physical therapy to support recovery and restore strength in surrounding muscles is also recommended.

If you have a severe fracture — such as a compound or comminuted fracture — surgery may be necessary. Surgery involves restoring regular alignment of the bones and holding them in place with metal hardware.
